Abandoned Building Blaze Tackled by CO FFs

West Metro Fire Rescue firefighters in Lakewood saw the fire from blocks away.

West Metro firefighters found a fully involved vacant structure fire in Lakewood.

The 9-1-1 calls started coming in around 2:15 a.m. from a number of people.

The building sits on a block with about a half dozen other abandoned structures, and West Metro has responded several times to fires in the area, fire officials said in a statement.

One concern early on was a nearby townhome complex. But the fire was contained to just the one building.

A complication was an open natural gas line that was feeding the flames. Once it was capped, firefighters were able to work on extinguishing the dozens of hotspots inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
